The Mansfield Rule is inspired by the NFL’s Rooney Rule and is named after Arabella Mansfield, the first woman admitted to the practice of law in the United States. The Mansfield Rule is data-driven and measures whether law firms have affirmatively considered women, lawyers of color, and LGBTQ+ lawyers—at least 30 percent of the candidate pool—for senior-level hiring, promotions, and significant leadership and governance roles in the firm. Panel members will discuss the evolution and goals of the Mansfield Rule, as well as significant outcomes thus far. Law firms who take the Mansfield approach to filling leadership positions ensure that they have access to the broadest field of talent possible as they build leadership for the next generation.
